A Public Sculpture Project at the CORE Recreation Center

Sijia Chen, the selected artist for the public sculpture at the new CORE Recreation Center at Morse Community Park, envisions a work that will stand as a cultural beacon and a gathering point for the Elk Grove community. The column-shaped sculpture will feature rectangular panels that weave together personal and collective narratives, capturing the unique stories of Elk Grove’s residents. These stories will reflect the community’s diverse history, values, and commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle—core principles that align with the mission of the Cosumnes Community Services District.

This project will provide opportunities for Elk Grove community members to actively engage in the creative process. In December 2024, Sijia will visit Elk Grove to meet with students, families, local business owners, and organizations, offering a chance to learn about her distinctive papercut art style. During educational workshops, participants will have the opportunity to create their own original papercut designs, contributing directly to the final artwork.

The completed sculpture will be a vibrant representation of Elk Grove's culture, history, and community spirit—a continuation of Sijia’s vision of public art as a platform for civic pride, engagement, and connection.
